Expert reviews

CNN review:

“The Opposite House is the city’s hippest address. The work of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, this 99-room boutique hotel shows off modern Beijing’s commitment to design and style.”

Forbes review:

“Fans of contemporary design will want to book their Beijing hotel reservations at this ultra mod Chaoyang hotel. Built during the crush of development surrounding the 2008 summer Olympics, Opposite House is just one example of the cutting edge architecture for which Beijing has since become known.”

Lonely Planet review:

“With see-all open-plan bathrooms, American oak bath-tubs, lovely mood lighting, underfloor heating, sliding doors, complimentary beers, TVs on extendable arms and a metal basin swimming pool, this trendy Swire-owned boutique hotel is top-drawer chic.”

Fodors review:

“This exemplar of 21st-century China has a huge atrium and contemporary art in the stunning lobby, plus spacious and warm guest rooms kitted out with natural wood and Scandi-Asian minimalist chic.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Beijing.

Frommers review:

“This boutique hotel is memorable from first glance, with its dramatic green and yellow glass façade. Designed by avant-garde Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, this chic 99-room spot is currently among Beijing’s hippest addresses.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Beijing.

Telegraph review:

“Expect Avant garde, minimalist interiors. The prices aren’t so minimalist, but perhaps that’s not surprising considering this hotel’s prime position in the centre of Sanlitun. There’s also a rather edgy Spanish-Italian fusion restaurant. One for the wealthy hipsters.”

Exceptional

The facilities are spectacular. The staff are super nice and helpful, too.

The traffic is *very* awful for cars, so I’d probably suggest metros for visiting other places in Beijing.

Great stay!

It’s chic and modern, the staff is very friendly, helpful, and customer orientated.

The pool area smelled slightly bad. A sauna would have been nice for the price as well. The breakfast buffet in general was rather average, the buffet choices were limited, and the food a la carte was modestly served. We were honestly expecting a little more.

nice place to stay, good hotel and location.

super friendly and helpful staff. room is is simple and beautiful. we had a view of a nice tree and made it extra relaxing when we were in the room. breakfast was good, but since we do not eat gluten, i wish there were some gluten free breads or pastries.

the gym is not great and very dark. we wanted to go for a swim before dinner but there was a swimming class for little kids so it was very noisy and not an inviting atmosphere to relax. then we tried to use the sauna and it didn't work either bec it was barely warm.

Fabulous

Spacious and bright room, very comfortable bed and free mini bar and sweets! A yoga mat is provided in the room. Amazing indoor pool. We were allowed to have a later check-out, much appreciated. 3 very good restaurants on site. Overall stay was very good, recommended!

I will never stay here ever again. For this price? Just a small top up and please do yourself a favour and book at eithe

Grace during check in was an absolute gem with perfect english. The lobby looks good.

1. No water bidet/automatic w/c (For a 5 Star hotel???) 2. Too dark! Lighting in the lift, gym and pool were at about 10-15% only - ridiculous! 3. Extremely noisy rooms - and they allow children/random people to play with the lobby piano regardless of how loudly they may play it. 4. Check out staff (female) was very unfriendly. I had asked for a 1hr extension and was rejected instantly. I then quickly went up to my room and pack up, only for her to call me back once I was already done packing. I only needed some extra time for my friend who was already on her way. - At least CHECK before you reject. why bother offering after? Doesn’t feel good anymore and I rejected her offer. It was also a very strict offer making me ensure 100% that my friend was able to make it before 1pm. Didn’t like her initial rejection and tone and content of the second offer. Note: She rejected me immediately before she bothered to check in the system. And later on called me back but it was already too little too late. 5. Room layout was weird but it wasn’t a big deal.

Nice but has aged

The location. The global architecture

Has aged. Bathrooms should be updated. Bad smell coming out from it.

Should be rename as The Opposh*t House

I had heard that The Opposite House was once hailed as the pinnacle of Beijing’s hotel scene. Often staying at The Upper House in Hong Kong, I was intrigued to experience its counterpart after my recent stay at Rosewood Beijing. Let me assure you, the contrast between the two experiences was as stark as Bliss and Torment. Unfortunately, my recent encounter with the Opposite House didn’t live up to expectations when it came to overall experience and room comfort. While the hotel’s prime location held promise, the prevalence of significant drawbacks cast a shadow over the stay, resulting in a very unsatisfactory experience.

After completing the check-in process, a bell attendant delivered my luggages to the room, left them by the door, and promptly departed. There was no orientation or explanation of the room’s features. Upon entering, I couldn’t help but notice that the room’s design seemed to prioritise its ‘aesthetics’ over practicality and comfort. A major drawback became apparent with the complete absence of any demarcation between the bedroom and the bathroom. This design quirk led to discomfort, particularly when stepping out of the shower or bath, as the abrupt shift in temperature caused by the air conditioning was disconcerting. To make matters worse, the master switch failed to power down all electrical components, leaving the lights in the shower and toilet on without any means of turning them off. The choice of hard surfaces throughout the room resulted in subpar sound insulation; as someone who prefers an early bedtime, the noises from the lobby persisted and hindered my attempts to sleep soundly. Privacy proved to be another HUGE concern. The hotel’s layout, with rooms facing an atrium much like public housing in Hong Kong, had regrettable consequences. Anyone in the lobby had a direct line of sight into each room, effectively broadcasting occupants’ comings and goings. I really do not understand the green film all over the window, is it an attempt to create a false sense of privacy? Once inside, the proximity of neighbouring buildings and the lack of one-way windows allowed pedestrians on the street to peer into the room, compromising both personal space and security. I can attest to this firsthand, as I observed my own room from the street with unsettling clarity. This lack of privacy dealt a significant blow to the overall comfort of the stay. Not great value for money.

The design is cool, staffs are friendly and helpful.

None of the restaurants allow dogs to dine in, even when it's extremely hot outside. Unfortunately, I don't think it can call itself Pet Friendly. Also, the restaurants on the lobby floor are loud, living upstairs wasn't exactly pleasant.

Quite disappointing.

Location

Staff service. Different staff made different mistakes. Room cleanness, stains in the bath tub. Wet towels at the balcony door. Poor soundproofing, could hear noisy sound upstairs and at the corridor. Pillows not comfortable.

i felt deceived.

Its location.

my friend in the room requested a room cleaning at 6pm when we were told there is no housekeeping service after 5pm. i was upset because i paid full fares, not reduced fare; why shall i be getting reduced services? it was the worst hotel experience i have had in 10 years in beijing thats why i cut my stay short. a hotel in beijing who charges me CNY2300 a night (more than peninsula in beijing) tells me there is no housekeeping after 5pm. i understand it was due to covid yet no one explained this to me before hand, only when i questioned why i was charged full fare for reduced services. i was disappointed and aggravated. i will never stay here again, it was insulting.
