The Independente Hostel & Suites, Lisbon

It’s a beautiful space, feels like an old Victorian mansion.

Unfortunately the internet connection in the upper floors is almost null, impossible even to google a thing. So for those who are traveling and working, working from the room is not suitable.

The place has an interesting quirky character, mixing old and new . Location is fantastic offering a high vantage point to view the city from . Tram and buses are outside but we didn’t use them. The reception staff is very friendly and helpful - ‘Big Mamma’ in the restaurant is wonderful - made us feel like an extended family . Thank you - we will definitely come again .

Wonderful room with vintage furniture and a small cute balcony. The building was also very beautiful with historical charm. And on the other hand, all the facilities were modern and comfortable.

Lots of character and a great location

Everything was really nice save one incident during breakfast. A young woman was broadcasting her phone conversation loudly throughout the restaurant. We politely asked her to take it off ‘speaker’. She wouldn’t and the staff was not willing to reinforce this request. Instead, they told her that it was okay to do this.

Location was perfect, right outside a tram and bus stop and opposite a fantastic viewpoint. Room was big, clean and the bed was fantastically comfy. Lots of reviews mention noise but I thought it was exceptionally quiet and I didn't need earplugs even being a light sleeper. The bar upstairs was closed that the time though so maybe that would have made a difference. We were given a welcome drink token which was a nice touch. Breakfast was good, I really can't fault it.

The location was fabulous . The building was really nice . Stayed in a dorm , the lockers were big enough to put all our belongings. Very nice set up . Breakfast was a real treat more than I expected

The wi fi was not working very well in the dorm . The kitchen facilities could be improve as the oven did not work . Limites showers as some were not working

The female wash/toilet room is not that clean. The bin was full and never emptied. Smells of pee.

Absolutely lovely stay, you get a welcome drink and access to beautiful shared spaces like a kitchen & living room, all within a small price. Great location, amazing decor and, most importantly, extremely friendly and helpful staff. Shout out to Antonio from reception whom I promised a great review. Breakfast was good enough, but the breakfast staff was 10/10 too!

There are places that need work like poorly secured mold in a non-working shower that is under maintenance. Cleanliness is ok, but bathroom amenities could perhaps be better. But within that price range it's still very very good.

Only Location is good . But you can find better quality hostels with good location and staff. The only hostel with a good booking score that I was not satisfied with. I regret it.

I think all the staff from the reception to the kitchen are unhappy. None of them smile and they look unhappy. The location of the hostel is good but there is no spirit in the hostel, I couldn't get an energy. After staying for 2 days, I moved to a different place without wanting to stay more. The bathrooms are beyond terrible. You can't even move while taking a shower. The worst shower cabin I have ever seen in my life.

This unique hotel/hostel combination was a great choice. We had a wonderful suite in this heritage property that was very large and comfortable and came with all the fun quirks of that era. No complaints.

Lovely location. Beautiful Heritage building. Dormitory rooms were quite spacious and beds were very comfortable. Staff very friendly and language (English) was readily available. Large windows opened right up onto main street which was very charming but could close at night for a quieter sleep.

I was travelling with friends who chose suites for private sleeping. I was in the dormitory rooms. I felt uncomfortable in the morning, when they got a menu for breakfast and I was not offered the same. This made me feel awkward and like I was not part of our group. I think a small draw curtain on the lower dormitory bunks would offer more privacy. This would also help with the light in the rooms when people come in at different times and others are sleeping. Just a simple cotton curtain on a clothesline would work. I tucked my towel and a small throw blanket I travel with into the bunk frame above around my bed. That worked pretty well.

Beautiful location, with an awesome view. The restaurant serves incredible food and the hostel itself is a really nice old building which has been renovated to feel classy but heritage. Everything is really clean and the staff are all fun and nice to be around.

The three level bunk beds were treacherous to get up, especially in the night when you didn’t want to wake others. I was on the very top so every time someone moved it shook the whole bunk bed and I didn’t sleep much at all. The bed and pillow was rock hard and as you are up so high the smells of everyone in the room and the heat is a bit much. There were some staff members laughing at me for being alone in the restaurant and making jokes in Portuguese thinking I wouldn’t know.

Beautifully appointed both in the public areas and the room, extremely friendly and helpful staff.

amazing location! great restaurant as well! included breakfast was simple but great (with option to pay for more) and ended up going for dinner and had a wonderful meal! staff were extremely friendly and helpful :) ++ welcome drink was appreciated!

no wi-fi and found reception unattended a couple of times and couldn’t reach them on the number provided at the desk! however they returned v quickly. wish the bunk beds had a railing - probably quite easy to slip on the steps to the top bunk.

I loved my stay in this Hotel, great experience. The hotel is nice, always clean, and comfortable. Hotel staff is very friendly and kind ;) They have a very nice restaurant with delicious food downstairs. Breakfast was very good. Very recommended. Definitely will stay in this hotel again.
